X-ELIO enters the energy storage market with a hybrid solar project in Chile

X-ELIO will be installing its first battery project in its 58 MW Uribe Solar PV plant in Chile

This hybrid project, with a 5 MWh battery system provided by Saft, will serve as a model run for X-ELIO who is developing a GWh-scale pipeline

Madrid, 9th June 2022. X-ELIO, a leading global company specialized in the development of renewable and sustainable energy projects, enters the Battery Energy Storage System market (BESS). The company will be installing its first BESS project in its 58 MW Uribe Solar PV plant, located in Chile, in the Antofagasta desertic region. Converting a renewable energy plant into a hybrid system, X-ELIO takes a step further in their lead on the road to global decarbonization through the development of ancillary technologies which contribute to this mission by providing flexibility to their solar PV plants and customers.

The project consists of a 5 MWh fully-integrated lithium-ion Energy Storage System, provided by Saft, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies, with two Intensium Max High Energy containers, together with power conversion and medium voltage transformer systems. The installation of this battery system will take place during the second quarter of 2023 and enter operation the following quarter.

Connected to a cloud-based data management platform, the solution embeds all real-time information services needed for optimal battery control, operation and maintenance. The storage system benefits from an enhanced, holistic safety architecture which embeds a unique combination of safety devices to mitigate fire and explosion hazards, which is fully tested and certified to international safety standards.

Storage enables the greater penetration of renewable energy and provides advanced grid services. This hybrid project is a first step for X-ELIO, which plans to significantly expand its capacity in this field in the coming years. The company counts with a team of energy storage specialists dedicated to obtain the maximum value from a solar-plus-storage and from stand-alone storage assets and ambitious plans to develop a pipeline exceeding 1 GWh by the end of the year.

“X-ELIO is excited to match its world class solar development expertise with our new energy storage capabilities, we are improving day by day and providing real solutions at the pace required for the energy transition to happen. At X-ELIO we firmly believe our business model is scalable, value accretive to our shareholders and based on the highest sustainability criteria. Energy Storage is a fundamental technology to enable decarbonization of our energy system, with many value streams still untapped; we are excited to work with a technology leader as Saft for our first step in this journey.”

Mirko Molinari, Chief Commercial Officer at X-ELIO

“We are glad to support X-ELIO as they seize new opportunities by entering the BESS market. This project in Chile demonstrates Saft’s capability to deliver turnkey, cost-effective energy storage solutions with its Intensium Max battery. Our products and services match the flexibility and performance requirements of X-ELIO to operate its asset efficiently throughout the project life, even under harsh desertic conditions.”
