X-ELIO and GREFA celebrate four years of success in Lesser Kestrel Conservation

  • The “Corridors for the Lesser Kestrel” project has proven to be an effective strategy for conserving this migratory species, classified as vulnerable in Spain
  • Thanks to this collaboration, more than 4,700 chickens have been successfully raised
  • The initiative is part of X-ELIO’s Nature Plan, a program designed to promote actions for the prevention, protection, and promotion of biodiversity

Madrid, March 19, 2025 – X-ELIO, a global leader in the renewable energy sector, and the Group for the Rehabilitation of Native Fauna and their Habitats (GREFA) are celebrating four years of collaboration on the “Southeastern Corridor for the Lesser Kestrel” project, which aims to regenerate the habitat of the lesser kestrel in southeastern Spain. Thanks to this partnership, protected colonies of this species have been successfully established and strengthened in several locations across Iberia.

Key initiatives include the installation and maintenance of nesting sites in agricultural silos, the construction of specialized breeding centers in strategic locations, monitoring of breeding pairs, and the banding of chicks for further study and protection.

In the southeastern corridor, GREFA has been actively working on four silos located in the provinces of Cuenca and Toledo. Throughout the collaboration, a total of 623 breeding pairs have been recorded across the southeastern region of the Iberian Peninsula, with approximately 1,763 chicks hatched, of which 917 have been banded.

A commitment to biodiversity

This collaboration is part of X-ELIO’s Nature Plan, a program designed to promote initiatives for the prevention, protection, and promotion of biodiversity. Through this plan, the company reinforces its commitment to preserving the natural environment in which it operates.

Through the Nature Plan, we continue to drive initiatives that ensure the preservation of species and ecosystems, reinforcing our purpose of fostering a more sustainable future.”

Fernando Garcés, Secretary General of GREFA, highlighted:
“The alliance with X-ELIO has been fundamental to the progress of our ‘Southeastern Corridors for the Lesser Kestrel’ project. Despite climate challenges, we have managed to maintain a stable population balance, and we will continue working together to adapt our strategies to new environmental challenges.”
