Madrid, 26 October 2023. – X-ELIO, a leading global company specializing in the development of renewable energy projects, the University of Granada and the Albolote City Council have held the presentation ceremony of the X-ELIO – Villa Romana Cortijo del Canal Chair, which took place at the Royal Hospital of Granada.
X-ELIO – Villa Romana Cortijo del Canal Chair is a cooperation whose objective is the research, restoration, conservation, and enhancement of the archaeological site located in the vicinity of the Cubillas Reservoir, where Roman remains from the 1st to 3rd centuries A.D have been discovered.
This initiative falls under X-ELIO’s Community Plan Program, through which the company encourages regional and local actions aimed at promoting the socio-economic development of the regions in which it operates. With this activity, X-ELIO aims to highlight the value of the region and attract sustainable and quality tourism, while investing in the training and education of experts and future visitors of the center.
The main objective of the project, which will be carried out entirely at the University of Granada, is the integral analysis of the Roman Villa of Cortijo del Canal, as well as its immediate surroundings, which will give way in the future to a diachronic study of the entire area surrounding the Cubillas reservoir.
Last June, an archaeological excavation was carried out in the Roman production complex, in which both teachers and students from the Archaeology Department of the University of Granada took part. The results showed a well preserved space dedicated to foodstuff production. The great novelty is the discovery of the production of wine during the 1st-2nd century AD, a foodstuff for which there was little evidence of its production in the Baetica region until now. The researchers consider this discovery to be a future reference for the study of local food in Roman times.
María Eugenia Rodríguez-Bailón Fernández, Councillor for Culture, pointed out that “the intention of the City Council is to continue collaborating and contributing, within our means, whatever we can to ensure that the project goes ahead”.
Pedro Mercado Pacheco, Rector of the University of Granada added: “We thank both the City Council of Albolote and X-ELIO for the opportunity to create this Chair, which is undoubtedly another tool that allows our students to interact with the environment first hand”.
Macarena Bustamante-Álvarez, Coordinator of the Master’s in Archaeology, explained that: “this type of initiative helps to preserve the past, understand the present and face the future in an interdisciplinary way, this favoring an open dialogue between different types of agents.”
